MONROE, La. - So far this year, the Stephen F. Lumberjacks are 2-0 on Sundays after they defeated the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, 11-10, Sunday afternoon in Monroe. The win snaps SFA's three-game losing streak and moves its record to 2-4 on the season, while the Warhawks move to 2-1.
In the first inning, senior Chris Smith hit a double down the right field line to bring in two of the `Jacks' three runs of the inning. SFA also scored three runs in the second inning and one more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead into the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Jeff Brewer led off with a single to right field and was put into scoring position on a David Jeans' bunt. Brewer and Kevin Crabtree, who was pinch running for Jeans, advanced to load the bases on a Steven Hill single. Brewer then scored on a ULM passed ball and Jared Pitts took three RBI on a home run to left center, putting the `Jacks ahead, 11-4. The Warhawks made a come back, scoring two runs in each of the final three innings, but came up short with a final score of 11-10.
For SFA, Lance Luetge made his first start of the season, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up four runs off eight hits. Jacob Leonhardt, making his second appearance of the year, pitched 2.2 innings and only allowed one hit and struck out three to take his first win of the season.
On the offensive side for the `Jacks, Brewer was 3-of-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Pitts was 3-for-5 with three hits and four RBI. Jeans and Hill each had two hits while Jeans scored one run and Hill scored two.
SFA will wrap up its 10-game road swing next weekend with a three-game set at Baylor.
