NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will open the 2007-08 season Monday night with an exhibition game against Abilene Christian. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. tip from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA is coming off a 15-14 season in 2006-07 that saw the Lumberjacks go 8-8 in Southland Conference play. The 'Jacks return just five lettermen from last season's team, but four of them -- Josh Alexander, Matt Kingsley, Gerald Fonzie and Scott Weaver -- were starters a year ago. The five returning players accounted for 54 percent of SFA's scoring and 53 percent of the rebounding.
Abilene Christian plays in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference. The Wildcats posted a 10-16 overall record and a 1-11 mark in LSC play last season. ACU returns five lettermen and one starter from that squad.
Admission to Monday's game is free for fans. The Lumberjacks open the regular season Friday with a home game against the University of Texas at Tyler. That contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip.
