NATCHITOCHES, La. - Northwestern State recorded 329 yards of rushing as it defeated Stephen F. Austin, 31-12, Saturday at Turpin Stadium in Natchitoches, La. The loss drops SFA to 0-11 on the season, marking the first winless season for the `Jacks since they went 0-6-1 in 1933.
Northwestern State jumped out to a 21-0 advantage behind 231 yards rushing on 35 carries from Byron Lawrence. He also scored the Demons final touchdown of the first half to give the Demons a three-touchdown lead.
SFA tried to answer back behind freshman quarterback Jeremy Moses. Moses, who completed 10-of-21 passes for 138 yards, picked up 52 in one play when he found Aaron Rhea streaking down the middle of the field. After making the catch, Rhea broke a tackle and sprinted into the end zone for the `Jacks' first score. But SFA was unable to capitalize on the momentum as it missed the extra point.
The Lumberjack defense held Northwestern State scoreless for the majority of the third quarter, but the Demons were able to record one score with 47 seconds remaining in the quarter. Demon quarterback Drew Branch connected with Dudley Guice for a 72-yard scoring strike to put the game out of reach.
The Lumberjacks were able to tack on one final score when freshman quarterback Jeremy Claybon scored on a 13-yard run. Northwestern State closed out the game with a 40-yard field goal to record the final tally.
