NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team jumped out to a quick start to the 2007-08 season making quick work of St. Mary's, 84-52, in an exhibition game Thursday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA had too many weapons for the overmatched visitors from San Antonio as five players finished in double figures, led by freshman Decreasha Goodner who poured in 15 points.
St. Mary's made it a close battle in the game's first 10 minutes, but the Ladyjacks began to pull away behind an impressive defensive performance. SFA forced the Lady Rattlers into 36 turnovers, recorded 26 steals and outrebounded its opponent, 46-37.
The Ladyjacks knocked down 48 percent of their shots while holding St. Mary's below 35 percent. The Lady Rattlers were only able to connect on 7-of-26 attempts in the first half as SFA took a 40-23 advantage into the locker room.
The Ladyjacks' upperclassmen took a back seat to the freshmen and sophomores as four of the five players to finish the game in double figures were sophomores or younger. Goodner was joined in double figures by classmates Ebony Alexander (14), Jordan Ford (13), sophomore Whitney Cormier (10) and junior Natashia Green (10).
Freshman Antoinette Davis-Jackson led a balanced SFA effort on the glass pulling down seven boards, while junior Jessica Gaines pulled down six rebounds to go along with seven points.
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday, Nov. 6, when they host Huston-Tillotson in their final exhibition game before opening regular-season play. The game against Huston-Tillotson is set to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
