NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will renew their rivalry with Sam Houston State Saturday when it hosts the Bearkats in the 82nd Battle of the Piney Woods. One of the oldest rivalries in the state of Texas, the annual contest will have a little more than bragging rights on the line in 2007.
The winner of the 2007 contest will take home a 21-pound solid cedar trophy that displays replica pistols, similar to the pistols that were on the original trophy in the '70's. The logos from both universities are engraved on the handle of the pistols. Below the pistols are nameplates to display the outcomes of the contest for the next 24 years.
"Rivalries add to the excitement and pageantry of college athletics," said SFA Director of Athletics Robert Hill. "This game is one that the fans look forward to each and every season. The trophy will add even more excitement for everyone involved in the series."
The trophy, which stands two-feet, two-inches, was designed by Winning Trophies of Palestine, Texas, at a cost of $600. The cost of the trophy was split between the Student Government Associations of both universities.
The trophy will be on display Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium, and following the game will be presented to the winner. Guards, from both schools, will stand watch over the trophy during the contest.
