SAN MARCOS, Texas - Jessica Cotton headed home a corner kick off the foot of Lauren Fricks midway through the second overtime period Sunday to give the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks a 2-1 win at Texas State. The victory improved SFA's season record to 6-3-2 and moved the Ladyjacks to 2-0-1 in Southland Conference action.
The winning score came in the game's 105th minute and was the Ladyjacks' first goal since Kelli Wilson opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Wilson took a pass from Fricks and headed the ball off the left post and in to put SFA ahead, 1-0.
The score remained unchanged until the 85th minute, when Britney Curry tied it up for Texas State.
The Ladyjacks failed to record a shot in the first overtime period, but stiffened defensively, holding the Bobcats to just one shot. SFA turned up the heat offensively in the second overtime, and it paid off.
After a Texas State shot and a save by goalkeeper Crystin Pactor in the period's opening minute, the Ladyjacks worked the ball back down the field, and Brenna Crockett took aim with a header. The shot was wide, but SFA's aggressiveness earned it what proved to be the game-winning corner kick.
That's when Fricks and Cotton hooked up for the game-winner. The goal was Cotton's third of the season and her second game-winner. Wilson's goal gives her four on the year -- good enough for second on the team. Fricks' pair of assists gives her a team-best five for the season. Sunday marked her first multiple-assist game of the year.
Pactor tied a career-high with nine saves. She started and played all 105 minutes to earn her sixth win of the season.
Sunday's game marked SFA's fourth overtime contest of the season and the second straight game to go to extra frames. The Ladyjacks were coming off a scoreless tie at Texas-San Antonio on Friday. SFA has yet to lose an overtime game this year, posting a combined record of 2-0-2 in the four contests.
SFA will return to action Friday, when the Ladyjacks host Central Arkansas. The team will then entertain Northwestern State Sunday afternoon.
