
SFA Hosts Conference-Leading Islanders

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - One vs. Two: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday in a pivotal Southland Conference West Division game. The Lumberjacks (13-6, 6-1) enter the game as the second-place team in the West, trailing the first-place Islanders (15-4, 6-0) by half a game. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. tip in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Last Game: The Lumberjacks held off a late charge to collect a 65-54 home victory over Texas-Arlington Saturday. The Mavericks cut a 12-point edge down to four points with around a minute left, before SFA answered with a strong finish, led by senior center Antuane Miller. Miller had a game-best 17 points -- the second straight contest he has led all players. Sophomore center Matt Kingsley joined Miller in double digits with 12 points. Senior guard Keith Hardaway added nine points, and junior forward Scott Weaver grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi: Wednesday's game will be the first meeting between SFA and the Islanders.
The Islanders: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enters the week as the hottest team in the Southland Conference. The Islanders have won nine games in a row, dating back to Dec. 29. Included in the league's longest winning streak is a 6-0 start to SLC play during which TAMU-CC has outscored the opposition by an average of 20.8 points per game.
The Coaches: Danny Kaspar is in his seventh season as the head basketball coach at SFA. Kaspar is 106-82 (.564) in his time with the Lumberjacks. He is 325-134 (.708) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach. The Islanders are coached by Ronnie Arrow. Arrow is 237-181 (.567) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach. He is in his eighth season at TAMU-CC, where he has compiled a 123-88 (.583) mark.
Up Next: The Lumberjacks will travel to San Antonio, Texas, Saturday to take on the Roadrunners of Texas-San Antonio. That game is set for a 6 p.m. start from UTSA's Convocation Center. Next week, SFA will make its first trip to Conway, Ark., to take on Central Arkansas. The game against the Bears is set for Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. The Lumberjacks will host SLC East rival Northwestern State the following Saturday.
Promotions: Wednesday's game is Smoothie King night at William R. Johnson Coliseum. The first 100 fans through the door will get certificates for a free 20-ounce smoothie from Smoothie King. T-shirts and other promotional items will be distributed throughout the game by the SFA Athletics Department.
