NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Time to Bounce Back: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will try to rebound from its first loss in seven games Thursday, when SFA (11-6, 4-1) travels to San Marcos, Texas, to take on Texas State. The game against the Bobcats (8-11, 3-3) is set for a 7 p.m. start in Strahan Coliseum. The Lumberjacks will look to regain the momentum of what had been their longest winning streak since the 2002-03 season.
Last Game: Sam Houston State put the brakes on a six-game winning streak and a 4-0 start to Southland Conference play with a 55-52 win at SFA last Thursday. The Lumberjacks led by 10 points with five minutes to play, but Sam Houston ended the game on a 13-0 run to take the win. Senior center Antuane Miller scored 16 points to lead the Lumberjacks. Sophomore center Matt Kingsley added 12 points. Senior guard Will Johnson pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Lumberjacks, as they beat Sam on the boards, 45-30.
vs. Texas State: SFA leads the all-time series against Texas State, 90-66. With 156 games since their first contest in 1925, the Bobcats rank second among SFA opponents in all-time meetings with the Lumberjacks. SFA is 9-2 against Texas State under head coach Danny Kaspar. The Lumberjacks have won five straight in the series, including a season sweep last year. SFA defeated Texas State, 70-59, at home in their last meeting.
The Bobcats: Coming off a 3-24 season in 2005-06, the Bobcats look re-energized under first-year head coach Doug Davalos. Texas State is 8-11 coming into Thursday's game. The Bobcats earned just one SLC win last season but are already 3-3 in league play this year. Texas State knocked off neighboring Texas-San Antonio, 67-63, Saturday to break a three-game skid.
The Coaches: Danny Kaspar is in his seventh season as the head basketball coach at SFA. Kaspar is 104-82 (.559) in his time with the Lumberjacks. He is 323-134 (.707) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach. Texas State is coached by Doug Davalos. Davalos is 8-11 (.421) in his first season with the Bobcats and has a five-year coaching mark of 80-46 (.635).
Up Next: The Lumberjacks will host Texas-Arlington Saturday. The game against the Mavericks is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA will be raising funds for the American Cancer Society through a Coaches vs. Cancer promotion at the game. Pledge sheets for donations can be downloaded from the SFA athletics Web site and mailed to the Men's Basketball office. Fans can also make pledges in person at the game. American Cancer Society volunteers will be on hand for assistance.
