Lumberjacks Join Fight Against Cancer

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - When the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team takes on Texas-Arlington on Saturday, Jan. 27, SFA will also be squaring off against another foe. The 'Jacks will try to help "Shoot Out" cancer, using their game against the Mavericks as a platform to raise money for the American Cancer Society as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative.
The Lumberjacks and head coach Danny Kaspar will be collecting pledges from SFA fans in the days leading up to the game against UTA and at the game itself. Fans will also be able to donate at Thursday's game against Sam Houston State. There are two ways to contribute. Those who wish to donate may do so by pledging a dollar amount for every Lumberjack 3-point field goal or by committing to give a set amount.
"It's almost certain that cancer has or will touch each of our lives at some point," Kaspar told a group of SFA fans at Monday's Lumberjack Luncheon. "This fundraiser is a way for each of us to touch back and make a difference in the fight against cancer."
As an added incentive, a flat donation of $20 or more, or a pledge of at least $5 per 3-pointer will make the contributor eligible to win a prize during a drawing at halftime. Five prizes will be raffled off. Gift certificates to Butcher Boys, Mr. Will's and Grogan's Cleaners valued at $100, as well as a $50 gift certificate to Casa Tomas will be given away. The drawing will also give away a backyard grilling set -- including grill, charcoal and utensils -- donated by H-E-B.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide campaign to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. The movement partners the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and was started in 1993, after former Missouri head coach Norm Stewart -- a cancer survivor himself -- challenged fans to contribute a dollar amount for every three points scored by his team during the season. The concept caught on and, today, more than 500 college coaches at all levels of competition are involved in the program, having raised more than $30 million to support the American Cancer Society.
All proceeds from this fundraising effort will go directly to the American Cancer Society, via Coaches vs. Cancer. Pledge cards will be available at the game.
