NACOGDOCHES - Former Tarleton State offensive coordinator Todd Schonhar has been named Stephen F. Austin quarterbacks' coach, announced SFA head coach J.C. Harper Monday afternoon.
"I am extremely excited to be adding Todd Schonhar to our staff," said Harper. "He has a long history of developing young talent, and will do a great job. His skills and knowledge of the game will be a definite asset to our program."
Schonhar has spent the previous two seasons serving as the offensive coordinator at Tarleton State, where he helped guide the Texans to the 2006 Lone Star Conference South Division Co-Championship. During his time in Stephenville, he coached 10 first-team All-LSC selections and two Offensive Back of the Year award winners, including Derek Ross, who is currently on the Kansas City Chiefs roster.
Prior to joining the Texans' staff, Schonhar spent three seasons coaching the offensive backfield at North Shore High School. Schonhar helped guide the Mustangs to the 2003 5A Division I State Championship with a perfect 15-0 record. During his three seasons at North Shore, the Mustangs never lost a regular-season game.
Schonhar is no stranger to the Southland Conference having spent two seasons at Sam Houston State. While in Huntsville, he was responsible for coaching the Bearkat receivers, and produced the university's all-time leading receiver, Matt Dominguez.
Prior to joining the SLC, Schonhar spent seven seasons at Northern Illinois coaching running backs. Schonhar produced the Huskies' only consensus All-American in Leshon Johnson. A finalist for the 1993 Heisman and Doak Walker Award, Johnson has spent time in the NFL with Green Bay, Arizona and the New York Giants. During his time in DeKalb, Ill., Schonhar produced two Doak Walker Award candidates and a Big West Player of the Year selection.
A veteran in the collegiate ranks, Schonhar has 15 years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and II levels. He has also made coaching stops at Oklahoma and Clemson.
