NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team faced off with the Texas-Arlington Lady Mavs in its first Southland Conference home match of the season and took an easy 3-0 win to extend its season record to 12-3 and 3-0 in SLC matches. The Mavs fell to 12-6 on the year and 1-1 in SLC play.
The Lady Mavs battled the Ladyjacks early in Game 1, but after SFA took the lead after a 10-10 tie, the Ladyjacks did not give it back, easing to a 30-21 win. SFA coasted to a 30-18 win before sealing the sweep with a 30-23 win.
"It was a real nice effort by our team," said Ladyjack head coach Debbie Humphreys about the win. "We stayed focused on the things we needed to do to be successful against them and that's what we did."
Junior Traci Rohde led both teams with 16 kills and was one block away from her third double-double of the season with nine.
"Traci has really stepped up this season and understands that she has a leadership position on this team," said Humphreys. "We need to have a go-to person, and she's become that go-to."
Sophomore Shelly Swendig chipped in with 10 kills and no errors for a match-high .435 hitting percentage. Sophomore Lauren Railey also had double-digit kills with 11, giving the match only three players with double-digit kills. Railey also had 24 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Senior Stephanie Figgers once again led SFA's defense with 26 digs.
As a team, the Ladyjacks had a .238 hitting percentage, while holding UTA to a .099 attack average.
The win marks SFA's seventh straight win this season, and its 38th consecutive SLC victory dating back to the 2004 season.
The Ladyjacks return to the net Saturday afternoon when they host Texas State at 4 p.m. at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
