NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team returns to the friendly confines of Homer Bryce Stadium Saturday, Sept. 23, to face Central Arkansas. The 'Jacks are coming off a heartbreaking loss at Arizona that saw SFA (0-3) fall just short in its upset bid. The youthful 'Jacks trailed by only four points heading into the final quarter before surrendering two touchdowns late in the game. The Bears enter Saturday's contest with a 2-1 (.667) overall record and looking to make it two wins in a row after their 16-14 victory over Missouri State. The game against Central Arkansas is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
SFA vs. THE BEARS: Saturday's game against Central Arkansas will mark the first meeting on the gridiron between the two schools.
MAKING THE TRANSITION: Although Saturday's game will not be considered a Southland Conference contest, Central Arkansas is making the transition into the SLC. A powerhouse at the NCAA Division II level, the Bears are in the first year of a four-year transition phase to the NCAA Division I-AA level. The Lumberjacks are 20-2 (.909) all-time against Division II schools, but dropped a 17-14 decision to nationally ranked Delta State earlier this season.
LINEBACKER Damian Perkins RECEIVES CONFERENCE AND NATIONAL ATTENTION: Perkins led the Lumberjacks' defensive effort Saturday against NCAA Division I-A foe Arizona from the Pac 10 Conference. Perkins was involved in 23 stops during the game recording 10 solo tackles. He also recorded his first career interception to help thwart a Wildcat drive.
NEXT UP ... The Lumberjacks will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 30, when they face North Dakota State. The game against the Bison is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
