NACOGDOCHES - Eighty-six football players reported to the Stephen F. Austin campus Thursday morning for the opening of fall camp. Included among the 86 athletes were 2005 All-American safety Keldrick Holman and 2006 preseason first-team All-SLC quarterback Danny Southall. The student-athletes will go through orientation meetings Thursday afternoon and evening with members of the athletic staff and coaches.
"I'm excited about the start of the new season," said SFA head coach Robert McFarland. "We're a young team, but we have some talented veterans returning to go along with a talented crop of incoming freshmen."
McFarland and his staff will open camp with a single workout Friday morning. The team will go through five acclimation practices before donning the pads for next Wednesday's workout. The 'Jacks' lone scrimmage will be Saturday, Aug. 19 at 8 a.m.
The Lumberjacks open fall camp with five athletes on the 2006 Preseason All-SLC team. Senior Keldrick Holman and juniors Danny Southall and Louie Runnels received first-team recognition, while punter Ryan Gooch and receiver Dominique Edison garnered second-team honors.
Notes: The annual "Meet the 'Jacks" will be held Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Fredonia Hotel.
The Lumberjacks kickoff the 2006 season Thursday, Aug. 31, in Tulsa, Okla. The game against the Golden Hurricane is slated to begin at 6 p.m., from Skelly Stadium.
