NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team faced its second two-a-day practice Tuesday at Homer Bryce Stadium. The work out, which looked more like a bout between two prize fighters in the morning session saw highlights on both sides of the ball.
The Lumberjack offense landed the first punch led by the Lumberjack offensive line. Junior Louie Runnels took advantage of hole opened up by the front line for a 15-yard gain. Classmate Danny Southall followed that up with a 17-yard completion to wide out Tyrell Williams.
The SFA defense then stopped the offense on its next three plays. The defense forced Southall into an incomplete pass, which was followed by a five-yard run from Runnels. The defense quickly regained the momentum sacking Southall for a loss of six yards. The sack would be the first of four occasions where the defense stopped Southall behind the line of scrimmage.
Continuing with the theme of punch-counter punch, the offense bounced right back behind its talented running backs. Runnels recorded a five-yard run followed by a nine and 13-yard rush from redshirt freshman Vincent Pervis.
Redshirt freshman Clint Bricker then stepped in behind center but his first pass was broken up on a nice play by true freshman Jeffrey Wilson. A 6-1 defensive back from Irving MacArthur, Wilson came right back to drop classmate Carlos Frank for a three-yard loss on the very next play.
The defense maintained momentum when Southall returned to the lineup, as the junior mishandled two of the next three snaps from center. The defense dominated the final five plays of the practice, dropping Southall behind the line scrimmage three times and intercepting his final pass. Tennessee transfer Corey Campbell made a nice diving play to record the interception.
The 'Jacks returned to the field at 7:30 for round two, a round that was started by a dominant defensive performance. The defense didn't allow the offense a positive yard for the first 10 plays of the scrimmage. The SFA defense recorded five sacks, two pass break ups and watched two dropped passes before the offense broke the drought with an 11-yard completion to Williams from junior college transfer Greg Meinzer. On the night the defense recorded 11 sacks, three pass break ups and stopped two ball carriers behind the line scrimmage.
The offense eventually picked up the pace completing 7-of-8 passes during one stretch. Sophomore Rodney Freeman caught three passes for 35 yards, while sophomore Dominique Edison hauled in three catches for 43 yards. Rookie Contrevious Parks also made a nice diving catch for a 24-yard gain.
The Lumberjacks return to the practice field Wednesday morning for an 8:25 practice.
