Lazenby to Compete in NACAC Games

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Reggie Lazenby is preparing to compete this weekend in the 2006 NACAC (North American, Central American and Caribbean) Track and Field Championships. Lazenby, the school record holder in the long jump, has been named to the U.S. under-23 team. The competition will be held July 7-9 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Lazenby qualified for Team USA as the top American-born collegiate long jumper in the nation. His school-record and Southland Conference-championship mark of 26-02.25 ranked second in the country overall, just behind the jump posted by a foreign-born athlete from Texas A&M. Lazenby is one of approximately 80 athletes competing on the US under-23 squad. The long jump is scheduled to begin Saturday at 5 p.m.
In all, more than 500 athletes from 28 countries will descend on the Dominican Republic for the NACAC U-23 Championships. The games are held every two years with the site rotating among the NACAC Athletics Association's 32 member nations. This year marks the fourth edition of the under-23 championships. Team USA dominated the competition each of the last two go-rounds. The Americans won 30 gold medals and 67 total medals at the 2002 games in San Antonio, Texas, and took home 58 medals - 28 gold - in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, in 2004.
Lazenby's most recent competition was the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held late last month in Indianapolis. There, the Lumberjack junior had the chance to compete against the best long jumpers in the world, including Dwight Phillips, a two-time world outdoor champion and 2004 Olympic gold medalist.
