LAKE CHARLES, La. - After consecutive one-win seasons in Southland Conference play, the league head coaches and sports information directors do not have high expectations for 2006 version of the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. SFA received 12 points and was picked to finish seventh in both preseason polls announced league officials at the Southland Conference Kickoff Celebration Wednesday afternoon.
McNeese State enters the season as the favorite in both polls receiving three first place votes and 31 points in the coach's poll and four first-place votes and 45 points in the SID poll. Defending co-conference champions Texas State and Nicholls State were picked second and third, respectively, in the coach's poll, while the Colonels were picked second in the SID poll. The Bobcats were dropped to fourth by the league SIDs.
The Lumberjacks return 36 lettermen and 15 starters, including first-team All-America defensive back Keldrick Holman from last year's 5-6 squad. Head coach Robert McFarland returns for his second season at the helm of the Lumberjack program.
SFA kicks off the season Thursday Aug. 31 when it travels to Tulsa, Okla., to take on the Golden Hurricane. The game against Tulsa is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Skelly Stadium.
