Chang Wraps Up Day 1 of Heptathlon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After the first day of competition in the women's heptathlon at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, Stephen F. Austin's Crystal Chang stands 22nd, with a score of 3,051 points. Following the completion of the first four events on Friday, Chang was 36 points back of the competitor in 21st place and a mere 40 points away from breaking into the Top 20.
The senior Ladyjack's strongest performance of the day came in the high jump, where she tied for 12th place with a height of 5-06.5. Chang tied for 21st in the shot put with a throw of 35-00.5, and recorded the 21st-fastest time in the field in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 26.29. Chang's time of 14.84 in the 100-meter hurdles ranked 25th among the field of the nation's best heptathletes.
Chang will return to action Saturday for the conclusion of the heptathlon with the final three events. The long jump and javelin remain, as does the 800-meter run, one of Chang's strongest events.
The other two SFA athletes to qualify for the NCAA Championships wrapped up their seasons on Wednesday and Thursday. Junior Reggie Lazenby held the second-best long jump mark in the country, entering the national meet. However, Lazenby just missed advancing to the finals. He finished 15th overall in the preliminary round on Wednesday with a jump of 24-01.75. Senior hurdler Stevina Wyatt also competed at the national meet. Wyatt posted a time of 1:03.43 in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing sixth in her heat and failing to advance to the semifinal round.
The second day of competition in the heptathlon is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the long jump.
