NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin men's basketball coach Danny Kaspar announced Wednesday the hiring of two new assistant coaches. Brette Tanner and David Peavy will join the Lumberjack coaching staff for the 2006-07 season. The additions fill two of the three assistant positions vacated this spring. Longtime assistant Steve Lutz recently left the staff to accept an assistant coach's position at Southern Methodist. Darren Kohne resigned last month after three years with the program, and first-year coach Greg Langford departed earlier this spring.
Tanner comes to SFA from South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. He served as an assistant there under Steve Green for the last two years. Prior to his stop at SPC, Tanner spent six years coaching at Fort Scott Community College, in Fort Scott, Kansas. Tanner was an assistant to Chris Beard the first two years at FSCC, and spent the last four as the program's head coach. In just four seasons guiding the team, Tanner managed to move into fourth place on the school's career wins list. He guided the Greyhounds to the Region VI Tournament all four years.
While at FSCC, Tanner's recruits included one Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference All-Star Game MVP, four all-region and eight all-conference players. The list of recruits also includes seven McDonald's All-American nominees, and four of Tanner's players have gone on to sign professional contracts. Also, in two of his four years as head coach at FSCC, Tanner's team posted the best grade-point average in the conference.
Tanner's collegiate playing career started with two years at Allen County Community College and finished with two seasons at Emporia State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. Tanner received his master's degree in kinesiology from Pittsburgh State. Tanner and his wife, Lindsey, have two children: 4-year-old Colby and Carson, who is one.
Peavy joins the Lumberjack coaching staff after eight years in the Texas high school coaching ranks, including four years as a head coach. His most recent post was as head basketball coach at Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas. Peavy led the Hightower program for two seasons. Prior to that, he was head coach at Gonzales High School for two years. Peavy began his high school coaching career as a varsity assistant and junior varsity coach for Alamo Heights High School in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas.
Peavy's first coaching experience came as an assistant on the women's basketball staff at his alma mater, Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. The team reached the playoffs in each of his two seasons there, made the first national tournament appearance in program history and posted the highest team grade-point average in the nation.
Peavy played at Incarnate Word under Kaspar for two years, one of them a conference championship campaign. He spent his sophomore year at Gavilan College in Gilroy, Calif., where he was a first-team all-conference selection and was elected team captain of his playoff-caliber squad. Peavy's collegiate playing career began in 1991 at Texas-San Antonio. The Roadrunners won the Southland Conference title in his only season on campus. Peavy earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Incarnate Word in 1996. He later received a master's of education from the university in 1998.
Peavy is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. He and his wife, Tamara, are the parents of three children: Teanna, 10, D.J., 7, and Micah, 5.
