NACOGDOCHES - For the second consecutive day, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team got great pitching and timely hitting to record a victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. SFA defeated A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-0, Sunday to sweep the weekend series and win the season series from the Islanders, who will be joining the Southland Conference next season.
The game was a pitchers' duel early as both teams were scoreless heading into the sixth inning. The Lumberjacks (11-39) cracked the scoreboard in the home half of the sixth with two runs. Junior Steven Hill led off the inning with a single to left field, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Sadler. Freshman Kevin Croft then drove Hill in with a single down the left field line. Croft came around to score two batters later on a Buck Britton double.
SFA was right back on the attack in the seventh when junior David Jeans walked and then utilized his speed to force the issue. Jeans stole second and on the very next pitch he took off for third. Jeans got credit for the steal and was able to score on an errant throw by catcher Miguel Mercado. SFA would tack on one more run to close out the inning.
That was more than enough offense for freshman Erich Lehmann who recorded his team-best sixth victory of the season. Lehmann scattered eight hits over nine inning and walked only two batters, while striking out nine. He is now 6-3 (.667) on the season.
Junior Kyle Freeman followed up a 2-for-4 outing with a 3-for-4 outing Sunday. Hill was 2-for-4 with a couple of runs scored, while sophomore Buck Britton went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a couple of walks.
The Lumberjacks return to league action Friday when they host Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series. Friday's game against the Lions is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from Jaycees Field. The series will close out the 2006 home schedule.
