NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team gave up two four-run innings Friday afternoon in a 10-5 loss to Southeastern Louisiana. The loss dropped SFA to 11-40 (.216) on the season and 3-22 (.120) in Southland Conference play and snapped the team's three-game win streak.
The 'Jacks surrendered a run in the top of the first, but cracked the scoreboard in the bottom half of the next inning. SFA loaded the bases, with only one out, for junior Chase Sadler. Sadler drew a walk on four-straight pitches to drive in the run.
The Lions built their lead to as many as five runs by scoring one in the fourth and four in the fifth, but SFA rallied right back in the home-half of the fifth. After retiring the first batter of the inning, the 'Jacks got runners to second and third on consecutive hits by juniors Steven Hill and Chase Sadler. Two batters later, classmate Clay Britton singled to right field to pull SFA within three, 6-3.
The score remained 6-3 until the ninth when SLU struck for four runs on three hits to take a 10-3 advantage into the bottom of the ninth. The 'Jacks rallied for two runs off Hill's league-leading 14th home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as Southeastern Louisiana held on for its 19th win of the season.
The `Jacks return to the diamond Saturday for the second game of the series. It is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from Jaycees Field. The game, which was originally scheduled to be broadcast on KSFA 860 AM, will not be broadcast due to technical difficulties.
