NACOGDOCHES - Tara Hersey was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle Sunday, batting 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and six RBI, in Stephen F. Austin's 14-8 loss to Nicholls State in Southland Conference softball play at Hoya Field.
After Nicholls State took an early 3-0 lead, SFA came back within one after Hersey hit a two-run blast over left center field to make the score 3-2.
The Colonels responded quickly in the top of the third and put some distance between them and the Ladyjacks, plating eight runs to make the score 11-2.
In the bottom half of the same inning with Carrie Woydziak and Hersey on base, Lee Lara hit a double into center field to bring home the two runs to make the score 11-4.
In the fifth inning, Hersey hit a double to score Jessica Tullos from second base to give the Ladyjacks another run, 11-5.
After Nicholls State took a 14-5 lead, SFA rallied in the ninth inning as Tullos and Benet Higgs hit back-to-back singles and were brought home on Hersey's second home run of the game to make the final score 14-8.
The loss sent SFA's overall record to 13-22 with an SLC record of 5-10. Nicholls State is now 16-22 overall and evened up their SLC mark at 9-9.
The Ladyjacks return to the field on Tuesday when they host Texas Southern at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Hoya Field.
