NACOGDOCHES - Just like the night before, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team rallied from an early deficit to tie the game late against McNeese State. But unfortunately for SFA, the Cowboys won the game in their final at-bat, just like the night before. Junior Brian Steinocher pitched his second complete game of the season, scattering eight hits and two earned runs over 8.0 innings of work, but he took the 4-3 loss to fall to 1-7 on the season. SFA falls to 6-29 (.171) overall and 2-15 (.111) in Southland Conference play.
The Lumberjacks fell behind 2-0 after three innings as McNeese State plated a run in the first and third innings, but Steinocher settled down and shut out the Cowboys over the next 4.0 innings. The 'Jacks' bats came to life in the top of the eighth as SFA battled back to tie the game.
After freshman Adam Bosley led off the top of the eighth with a single, sophomore Buck Britton hit a ground-rule double to right field, advancing Bosley around to third. Junior Steven Hill drove in the 'Jacks' first run when he grounded out to second base. Classmate Clay Britton drove in his brother Buck with his single through right side, tying the game at 2.
Steinocher came back out in the ninth inning but couldn't hold the lead. McNeese State's James Thiboduax led off the inning with a walk. Three batters later Thibodaux scored on a triple by Shon Landry, who would later score on an SFA error. The 'Jacks were hurt by their fielding Saturday surrendering five errors on the afternoon.
Clay Britton continues his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in. Freshman Zach Gardner also went 2-for-4 at the plate for SFA.
The Lumberjacks close out the three-game series against McNeese State Sunday. The final game of the series is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from Cowboy Diamond.
