LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to McNeese State Sunday afternoon at Cowboy Diamond in Lake Charles, La. The Cowboys swept the three-game series to bump SFA to 6-29 (.167) on the season and 2-16 (.111) in Southland Conference play.
The Cowboys took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when center fielder Charlie Kingrey hit a solo shot to right field with two out. McNeese State added to its lead in the bottom of the third without the benefit of the hit. The 'Jacks walked five and hit one batter, which allowed three runs to score in the inning.
The score stayed 4-0 until the top of the fifth with freshman Gabe Garcia-Serrano singled to lead off the inning. After being sacrificed over to second, Serrano stole third and scored when Cowboys' catcher Jeramie Broussard threw the ball by the third baseman. SFA tacked on another run in the sixth when freshman Ryan Sinclair belted solo home run to left field. But the `Jacks couldn't hold the momentum as McNeese State answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead.
SFA pushed across one more run in the top of the eighth, but could get no closer Cameron Chandler came on in relief to pitch the final 1.2 innings. Chandler didn't surrender a hit in his appearance and struck out two hitters.
Freshman Erik Gregersen made the first start of his career Sunday but was only able to pitch 2.1 innings. Gregersen only surrendered two hits, but his control failed him as he walked five batters. He finished the game striking out two Cowboys.
Junior David Jeans went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored for SFA. The other four Lumberjack hits were recorded by Sinclair, Garcia-Serrano, junior Clay Britton and classmate Steven Hill.
The Lumberjacks return to action Thursday when they open a three-game series against Northwestern State. The game against the Demons is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
