
Lumberjacks Fall in Heartbreaker

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team was leading Texas-San Antonio by a run, 5-4, with two outs in the ninth inning, but the 'Runners rallied for a run in the ninth and scored one in the 12th to record the 6-5 victory. The Lumberjacks are now 8-39 on the season and 3-20 in Southland Conference play.
Freshman Zach Gardner went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run batted in and two runs scored, and junior David Jeans went 3-for-6 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored to help the 'Jacks build a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning.
SFA scored two runs in the fifth and scored three in the eighth to take its first lead of the game, but the Roadrunners tied the game in their final at-bat to send SFA into its third extra-inning game of the season.
The 'Jacks were 2-0 in extra-inning games heading into Saturday but UTSA pushed across the only run in the bottom of the 12th for the victory. Lee Tadesco singled with one out in the inning and advanced to third on a couple of wild pitches. Tadesco scored the game-winning run on a single to left field off the bat of James Keithley.
Junior Brian Steinocher got the start and went 6.2 innings surrendering four runs on five hits. Steinocher struck out five Roadrunners. Juniors Steven Hill, Chris Smith and Jeremy Arterburn each recorded two hits for SFA.
The 'Jacks will finish off the three-game series against UTSA Sunday afternoon. The game against the 'Runners is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
