NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team was swept by Texas-Arlington, as UTA defeated the 'Jacks, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at Jaycees Field. The Lumberjacks are now 6-26 on the season and 2-13 in Southland Conference play.
UTA got on the board in the second inning when Robby Winn took a Sammy Hardwick 0-2 pitch over the left field fence for a home run. That would be all the scoring over the next 3.2 innings as Hardwick shut down the Maverick attack. Hardwick pitched 5.1 innings surrendering five hits and only three runs, while striking out five UTA batters, but he ran into trouble in the sixth inning.
UTA got its first two hitters aboard and had runners at second third with no outs. After striking UTA catcher Jeremy Stevens, SFA surrendered a run off a balk. The second run of the inning scored when Danny Slinkman singled to score Adam Moore.
The Lumberjacks answered in the bottom half of the sixth. After Zach Gardner singled, junior Clay Britton drove him around with his first triple of the season. SFA tacked on another run when Chase Sadler recorded a pinch-hit sac fly to score Britton from third.
The Mavericks answered with two more runs in the top half of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead, before SFA rallied again in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Steven Hill doubled to right center with only one out. Hill scored when junior Kevin Croft followed with a double to pull the 'Jacks back within two, 5-3. But SFA could get no closer, as UTA's Kyle Gainley pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.
Juniors David Jeans, Kevin Croft and Clay Britton each finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate. Britton also drove in a run and scored a run. Hardwick falls to 0-4 on the season, despite pitching a strong 5.1 innings and striking out five batters.
SFA returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Dallas, Texas, to take on Dallas Baptist University. The game against DBU is slated to begin at 6 p.m., from Patriot Field.
