NACOGDOCHES - Junior pitcher Brian Steinocher went 9.0 innings surrendering four runs and striking out 11 Demon batters, but it wasn't enough as Northwestern State held on for a 4-3 victory Friday afternoon at Jaycees Field. SFA is now 7-31 on the season and 3-17 in Southland Conference play.
Steinocher got out to a rough start surrendering four runs on four hits in the first inning, but he settled down after that allowing only four hits the rest of the way. The Lumberjacks battled right back in the bottom half of the inning, scratching out two runs. SFA had runners at second and third with two out when Eric Tasler singled to right field to score David Jeans and Steven Hill. Tasler was thrown out at second on the play to end the inning.
The pitchers took control of the game and didn't allow another run until the bottom of the sixth inning. SFA had a runner at second with only one out, when designated hitter Kevin Croft hit a solid single to left center to score Tasler from second, but that would be the final run of the game as SFA was unable to tie things up late in the game.
Steinocher dropped to 1-8 on the season, despite recording his third complete game. Croft finished the afternoon 2-for-4 at the plate, while Tasler was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Junior Clay Britton recorded the 'Jacks' other hit.
SFA returns to the diamond Saturday for the rubber game of the series against Northwestern State. The game against the Demons is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
