HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team lost a 12-point lead Thursday night to fall to Sam Houston State, 78-72, in Huntsville. The `Jacks end their season in the SLC semifinals with a 17-12 (.586) overall record.
Four Lumberjacks scored in double figures, led by senior point guard Marcus Clark's 24 points, but it wasn't enough to stop the Bearkats, who shot 24-of-50 (.480) from the floor. Sam Houston was led by JeJaun Plair's 29 points. Ryan Bright also added 20 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.
SFA went 24-for-56 (.429) from the floor, including a 7-of-17 (.412) performance from beyond the arc. The Lumberjacks knocked down 81 percent of their free throws, but it wasn't enough to get past a determined Bearkat team playing on its home floor.
The `Jacks were also hurt on the glass, where they were out-rebounded, 39-28, including 12 offensive rebounds by the Bearkats. Sam Houston turned the offensive boards into points, outscoring the Lumberjacks, 18-8, in second-chance points.
Senior Anthony Paez concluded his career with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists. Freshman Josh Alexander scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Keith Hardaway chipped in 12 points and dished out a team-high seven assists.
