
Lumberjacks Split Doubleheader

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team (6-23) split a doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday afternoon at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Islanders rallied to take the first game, 5-4, in seven innings. SFA displayed one of its largest offensive outputs of the season to win the second game, 10-5.
The Lumberjacks raced out to a 10-0 lead in the second game scoring two runs in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, three more in the sixth and one in the seventh. Junior catcher Steven Hill led the 'Jacks' power surge by going 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and three runs batted in. Not to be outdone, freshman Kevin Croft also went 3-for-5 in the second game with a solo home run. Junior Clay Britton was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and freshman Angel Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a couple of RBI.
Freshman Erich Lehmann pitched six inning of scoreless ball to pick up the victory. He scattered four hits and walked only two, while striking out eight Islander hitters. Lehmann is now 3-1 (.750) on the season.
The Islanders rallied to win the first game, 5-4. After falling behind by a run, the Lumberjacks scored three in the third and one in the fourth to build a 4-1 advantage. The 'Jacks had runners at first and second when Hill doubled to right center to score Gabe Garcia-Serrano and Chance Tabor. Two batters later, freshman Ryan Sinclair singled to score Hill. SFA added the fourth run when Garcia-Serrano doubled Eric Tasler in the top of the fourth inning.
But after giving up four runs, Islander starting pitcher Will Norman settled down and didn't allow another runner to cross the plate. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored one in the home half of the fourth and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run inning. The Islanders won the game in the bottom of the seventh, after getting the two runners aboard, Josh Plumaj singled to drive in the winning run.
SFA returns to action Friday when it hosts Texas-Arlington. The game against SLC leading Mavericks is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from Jaycees Field. The Saturday and Sunday games of the series will begin at 1 p.m.
