NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team surrendered three runs in the second and three in the seventh to fall to Texas-Arlington, 6-0, Friday afternoon at Jaycees Field. Freshman starter Richard Folmer provided another strong start for SFA, but takes the loss for the second straight game. Folmer is now 0-2 on the season. The 'Jacks are now 6-24 (.200) on the season and 2-11 (.154) in Southland Conference play.
Folmer scattered five hits over six innings, surrendering three runs, one earned, and striking our two Mavericks, but he was out-dueled by UTA's Ryan Riddle. Riddle pitched 9.0 innings for the shutout victory, striking out seven hitters.
UTA got on the board in the second inning when right fielder Danny Slinkman led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, Robby Winn drove Slinkman in from third base to plate the first run. The Mavericks closed out the inning by scoring two more runs.
SFA had an opportunity to crack the scoreboard in the home half of the fifth when David Jeans and Zach Gardner recorded back-to-back singles with two outs. Junior Chase Sadler came off the bench to pinch-hit for Buck Britton and put a scare into UTA fans. Sadler crushed a ball to left field that was snagged by Kyle Thomason just shy of the wall.
Folmer gave way to freshman Angel Hernandez in the seventh inning, but Hernandez struggled surrendering three runs on two hits in just a third of an inning. Classmate Erik Gregersen came on in relief of Hernandez to quiet the UTA rally. Gregersen closed out the game pitching 2.2 innings, surrendering no hits.
Junior David Jeans and freshman Zach Gardner both finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, while juniors Jeremy Arterburn and Clay Britton recorded the 'Jacks' other two hits.
SFA returns to action Saturday when it hosts the Mavericks in the second game of the three-game series. The game against the Mavs is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
