NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team finished off spring practice with its final workout Monday afternoon at Homer Bryce Stadium. The Lumberjacks held their third and final scrimmage Saturday afternoon, which displayed a solid effort from the 'Jacks' defense.
Senior defensive back Freddie Parish recorded a game-high 11 tackles, including six solo stops, while 2005 All-American Keldrick Holman posted six tackles and picked off one pass. Six different 'Jacks recorded a sack on the afternoon led by Luke Swadley's three. Jay Walbran finished the afternoon with eight tackles and two sacks.
SFA also received some great production from its stable of running backs. The 'Jacks' backfield carried the ball 34 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Vincent Pervis led the way with 12 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. The other score was recorded by sophomore Lester Simmons who finished the game with nine carries for 49 yards. Simmons' touchdown came on a six-yard scamper in the south end zone. Junior Louie Runnels carried the ball 10 times for 44 yards.
"I've been very pleased with the shape and conditioning of our players coming into spring practice," said SFA head football coach Robert McFarland. "They have worked hard during the off season to get ready for 2006. Strength and conditioning coach Dan Eason has done a great job with these guys in a short period of time. We will now get together and finalize our depth chart."
The Lumberjacks open the 2006 season on Thursday, Aug. 31st when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., to face the Golden Hurricane. The game against Tulsa is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
