SFA Defense Strong in Final Scrimmage

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team concluded the third of three scheduled spring scrimmages Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium. The 85-play scrimmage was dominated by the Lumberjack defense, which surrendered only two scores on the afternoon.
"The majority of the positions are set," said SFA head coach Robert McFarland. "The coaching staff will get together this week and finalize the depth chart. We had some needs coming into the spring, but I believe we really addressed those needs through recruiting."
Senior defensive back Freddie Parish recorded a game-high 11 tackles, including six solo stops, while 2005 All-American Keldrick Holman posted six tackles and picked off one pass. Six different 'Jacks recorded a sack on the afternoon led by Luke Swadley's three. Jay Walbran finished the afternoon with eight tackles and two sacks.
The Lumberjack signal callers had a tough afternoon in the annual spring game. Junior Danny Southall took the snaps with the No. 1 offense and finished the game 15-for-26 for 149 yards and one interception. Redshirt freshman Clint Bricker was 7-of-14 for 34 yards.
"I'm happy with the progress of our quarterbacks," McFarland said. "We have a couple of talented options, but I'm concerned with our depth at the position."
The 'Jacks' backfield carried the ball 34 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Vincent Pervis led the way with 12 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. The other score was recorded by sophomore Lester Simmons who finished the game with nine carries for 49 yards. Simmons' touchdown came on a six-yard scamper in the south end zone. Junior Louie Runnels carried the ball 10 times for 44 yards.
The Lumberjacks will close out spring practice with a 3:30 p.m. workout on Monday at Homer Bryce Stadium.
