BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar scored eight runs in the final two innings Saturday to record a 12-2 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team. The loss drops the 'Jacks to 5-21 (.912) overall and 2-9 (.182) in the Southland Conference play.
The Cardinals jumped on the scoreboard first when Dan Hernandez doubled in a run in the top half of the first inning to give Lamar a 1-0 lead. LU added three runs in the home half of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead into the third inning.
Freshman Sammy Hardwick got the start but was only able to go an inning and two-thirds, before classmate Erich Lehmann came on in relief. Lehmann shutout the Cardinals over the next four innings, striking out three batters, but ran into some trouble in the seventh inning.
After getting the first two runners aboard, Will Henderson hit one of his two home runs on the afternoon to give Lamar a seven-run lead. LU starter Will Delage carried the shutout into the eighth inning before SFA was able to crack the scoreboard.
After junior David Jeans singled to lead off the inning, freshman Kevin Croft hit his first home run of the season to put SFA on the board. But SFA couldn't hold the momentum as Lamar answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning for the final tally.
Croft finished the day 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Junior Jeremy Arterburn got the start at first and went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Lumberjacks close out the three-game series Sunday with a 1 p.m. game. Freshman Richard Folmer is scheduled to take the mound for SFA.
