BEAUMONT, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision at Lamar Friday night. The Lumberjacks are now 5-20 (.200) on the season and 2-8 (.200) in Southland Conference play.
Junior catcher Steven Hill recorded his league-leading seventh home run of the season in the top of the first to give the Lumberjacks a one-run lead, but that would be all the offense SFA would muster as it dropped its second straight game.
The Cardinals answered with two runs in the home half of the third to claim a one-run lead. Lamar tacked on a single run in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 4-1 lead.
Junior Brian Steinocher gave SFA six solid innings, striking out six Cardinals and walking only two, but he surrendered six earned runs. The loss drops Steinocher to 1-4 on the season. The `Jacks' pitching staff ran into trouble in the seventh inning surrendering six runs for the final tally.
Juniors Clay Britton and David Jeans, along with sophomore Buck Britton, went 1-for-4 at the plate. Hill finished the game 1-for-3 with the home run.
The Lumberjacks return to the diamond Saturday for the second game of the series. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m., with freshman Sammy Hardwick scheduled to take the mound.
