NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team is in its final stages of the 2006 spring camp as it prepares for Saturday's scrimmage. The annual Spring Game will begin Saturday at 3 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium, and will be the final of three scheduled scrimmages. The 'Jacks will run 85 plays, which will pit the No. 1 offense against the first-team defense and the No. 2 offense against the No. 2 defense.
"We have a couple of positions that are still open and this scrimmage will decide our final depth chart for the spring," said SFA head football coach Robert McFarland. "We have some young players at a couple of positions that we believe can really help us this season and we're really excited to see them one more time in game-type situations."
The `Jacks' held their first scrimmage Saturday Feb. 25th, which highlighted the team's depth at running back. The Lumberjacks rushed for more than 280 yards and recorded four touchdowns on the day.
The team's second scrimmage was dominated by an opportunistic defense. The first-team defense recorded four sacks and didn't allow a touchdown, while putting constant pressure on the Lumberjack quarterbacks. Lake Charles, La., product, Jonathan Botley recorded the interception, while linebacker Robert Castillo led the team with three sacks.
"We have seen a lot of improvement at every position," McFarland said. "One of the things I've been impressed with is the conditioning of our players coming into spring drills. They have worked really hard with strength coach Dan Eason and it is really showing on the field."
The Lumberjacks will close out spring camp Monday with their final practice, which will begin at 3:30 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium. The practice is free and open to the public.
