NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team is preparing for its second scimmage of the spring season. SFA head coach Robert McFarland will lead his troops onto the field at Homer Bryce Stadium Friday for the second of three planned scrimmages. The scrimmage is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
"We have a lot of young players that are having to step into starting roles this season," McFarland said. "In our first week of practice we wanted to establish our base offensive and defensive schemes. Now that the first scrimmage is out of the way we are incorporating more of our packages.
The first scrimmage highlighted the Lumberjacks' backfield as three different backs rushed for at least 75 yards. Returning All-Southland Conference honoree, Louie Runnels carried the ball 15 times for 75 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman Vincent Pervis carried the ball 11 times for 112 yards, including runs of 11, 16 and 45 yards.
The SFA signal callers also displayed their talents as sophomore Danny Southall took the snaps with the first team and completed 17-of-29 (.580) passes for 169 yards and one touchdown. He also led the offense to two other scores. Redshirt freshman Clint Bricker was 11-for-15 (.733) for 56 yards and one touchdown. He finished the game completing eight of his last 10 passes.
"Both Danny and Clint have worked hard during the off-season," said McFarland. "They both have put on about 15 pounds of muscle. The hard work is really paying off. I thought both young men have done a good job of handling the offense. Danny has a slight edge right now based on his experience."
The `Jacks will close out spring practice on March 27, but will hold the annual spring game on Saturday, March 27. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Homer Bryce Stadium.
