NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer coach Jaime Frias announced Friday the signing of Brenna Crockett to a national letter of intent. Crockett's addition brings the total for Frias' first signing class to eight players. Crockett is the sixth prep signee added to the roster this spring.
Crockett is a 5-9 forward from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Frias says her size and athleticism were the first things to draw his attention. Then, once he saw her ability to score in the air, he knew she was a player he wanted.
"I saw Brenna play for the first time at a camp I attended in Canada this past summer," the coach said. "She immediately caught my attention when she went up to head a ball off a cross and struck the ball with such power."
Crockett has logged four-and-a-half years as a club soccer player for the Calgary Southwest United Storm 89s, under coach Rick Luciani. Her team took first place in the under-17 Metro Division of the KYSA Youth Soccer Cup in British Columbia last year. The Storm also participated in the College Search Tournament Showcase last summer and the Texas Cup this past November. In 2004, the Storm took second place in the under-16 Premier Division with an 8-1-5 record. The team also finished fourth that year in the under-16 division of three separate tournaments in Canada. The preceding year, Crockett and the Storm won the under-14 Premier Division with an undefeated 12-0-4 record. The team also won first place in the under-15 Metro Division of the North Shore Girls Thanksgiving Tournament and took first in the under-14 Premier Division of the Calgary Girls Tournament. The Storm finished in the Top 3 in two other tournaments that season.
As an individual, Crockett's play has earned invitations to the Canadian National Training Center in both 2003 and 2005. In 2005, she was named to the under-16 Alberta Soccer Association's Under-16 Provincial All-Star Team. She took the bronze medal in the national all-star competition that year. Crockett earned a regional tryout with the Alberta Soccer Association in 2004 and was a part of the South Alberta Provincial Winter Training in 2002-03 and in 2003-04. She was selected to the Alberta Soccer Association's South Provincial Team in 2003 and helped the team finish second in the Rocky Mountain Cup. She has also spent two years playing for coach Craig Clydesdale on Alberta's team in the Olympic Development Program.
Crockett is a senior at John G. Diefenbaker High School, where she plays volleyball and is a member of the track and field team. As a middle blocker on the volleyball squad, Crockett helped lead her team to the city championships in 2003. She runs the 200-meter dash during track season and was voted Athlete of the Year as a freshman.
Crockett is the daughter of Raymond and Sharon Crockett. She was born in Calgary in 1989.
"She's tall, strong, athletic and very fast," Frias said of Crockett. "She holds the ball extremely well with pressure on her back and has the technical ability to maintain possession of the ball in the attack. We will look for Brenna to add a different dimension to our team next year."
