MISSOURI CITY, Texas - Senior Brian Grossman shot a final-round 74 Tuesday to earn a playoff for the individual championship in the Rice Intercollegiate, where he was edged by Colorado State's Derrick Whiting. Grossman took second place in the individual scoring, and the Lumberjacks finished 12th as a team in their first action of the spring season.
Grossman began Tuesday in a tie for third, one stroke off the lead, after posting a four-over 74 in the opening round and a one-over 71 in Round 2. He was the last golfer eliminated in the sudden-death playoff that lasted three rounds on the Par 4 10th hole. Grossman finished the tournament with a three-round score of 219, nine strokes over par. Grossman's second-place finish is the best posted by a Lumberjack golfer in the 2005-06 season.
Grossman's classmate, Jason Landry, also finished in the Top 20. Landry shot a 74 Tuesday to finish tied for 16th with a final score of 225. He opened the tournament with a 78 but followed it up with a strong 73 in the second round.
Freshman Josh Irving finished with a three-round score of 233 to crack the Top 50. He finished 48th after carding rounds of 83, 78 and 72. Junior Ryan Salinas had rounds of 83, 82 and 80 to finish with a 245, and freshman Johnathan Porter finished at 250 after shooting 79, 85 and 86.
The Lumberjacks' next competition will be Feb. 20 and 21 at the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunner Intercollegiate. The tournament will be held on the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio.
