LUFKIN, Texas - Crown Colony Country Club is close enough to Nacogdoches for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team to consider it a "home" course. But in Monday's opening round of the SFA Crown Classic, it was a team that traveled over 550 miles to play that looked most at home on the local links. Missouri State shot 287 in Round 1 to take the early lead in the tournament. Texas-Pan American finished the first day one stroke back, and Oral Roberts held the third spot, with a first-round total of 292. The Lumberjacks opened the tournament with a 294, good enough to tie them for fifth place with Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State.
Senior Brian Grossman finished Day 1 tied for fifth place, leading the SFA effort. Grossman shot a 33 on the front nine and a 38 on the back for a one-under 71. He led all players in par 4 scoring average at 3.63. Grossman also recorded four birdies on the day.
Senior Jason Landry and sophomore Tyler Trichell posted the next-best score for the Lumberjacks. They each shot two-over 74 and will start Round 2 tied for 21st place. Freshmen Josh Irving and Johnathan Porter finished the first day tied for 30th, each golfer carding a 75.
Three Lumberjacks are competing as individual medalists. Junior Ryan Salinas leads that pack with a 78, which has him tied for 50th. Senior Josh Price and junior James Winkley recorded an 80 and 81, respectively, in the first round.
The Classic will wrap up with Round 2 on Tuesday. The final 18 holes of the tournament are set to kick off at 8 a.m. The event was originally scheduled for three rounds, but, thanks to weather delays Monday morning, it was trimmed back to 36 holes.
