NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team improved to 2-1 (.667) Sunday afternoon with a 3-2, 12-inning victory over Arkansas-Little Rock. Junior Chase Sadler played the role of hero driving in the game-winning run with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th.
It didn't take long for SFA to put runs on the scoreboard in final game of the series. Juniors Steven Hill and Chris Smith doubled in the home half of the first to give SFA a 2-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Jake Leonhardt got the start and gave SFA six scoreless innings, but ran into some trouble in the seventh inning. The Trojans loaded the bases on three consecutive singles, and broke through with its first run of the game when Matt King flied to center, scoring Matt King. UALR tacked on another run, before freshman Jared Schrom came on in relief to quiet the rally. Schrom gave way to junior Josh Bone in the ninth inning and Bone gave the `Jacks three-and-a-third scoreless innings, surrendering only one hit and striking out one.
After both teams had spoiled scoring opportunities in extra innings, the `Jacks didn't let one slip away in the 12th. The `Jacks loaded the bases with two outs for Sadler, and he came through with a solid single to left field for the victory.
Freshman Erich Lehmann picked up his second win of the season, pitching two-thirds of an inning recording a strikeout. Three `Jacks recorded two hits on the day including Sadler, junior David Jeans and sophomore Buck Britton. Junior Kyle Freeman finished the game 1-for-5 with two runs scored.
Leonhardt pitched six-and-a-third solid innings for the `Jacks. He surrendered only two runs and seven hits in the outing.
Due to Saturday's second game being suspended, it was finished early Sunday afternoon. After being down 9-4 in the seventh inning, junior designated hitter, Steven Hill hit a three-run home run to bring the `Jacks within two, 9-7, but SFA was unable to get any closer as UALR added one more run in the top half of the ninth.
The Lumberjacks return to action Friday when they travel to Waco, Texas to take open a three-game series against Baylor. The first game of the series will begin Friday at 3 p.m. from Baylor Ballpark.
