
Baylor Defeats SFA, 9-2

WACO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team was defeated by the Baylor Bears, 9-2, on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark after their series opener was pushed back a day due to inclement weather.
Baylor's Chase Gerdes led off the first inning with a double to left center and then advanced to third on a sac bunt by Beamer Weems. Zach Dillon flied out to left field to grab the RBI and give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that the `Jacks earned their first hit on a Clay Britton single down the left field line. Adam Bosley answered with a single up the middle to move Britton to second, but it was not enough as Corey O'Connor grounded into a double play to end the inning with Baylor leading, 3-0.
Baylor would answer with six more runs to make the score 9-0 before the Lumberjacks crossed the plate in the ninth inning. Kevin Croft started the inning with a double down the left field line followed by Zach Gardner reaching first base on a wild pitch by Randall Linebaugh. Croft scored on Gabriel Garcia-Serrano's single through the left side and Gardner crossed the plate on a David Jeans single to shortstop. Garcia-Serrano tried to score on the play but was out at home to end the game with a final score of 9-2.
In his second start of the season, Brian Steinocher was served with the loss to move his record to 0-1 after pitching 5.1 innings and giving up eight runs on five hits. Steinocher had three strikeouts. The Bears' Ryan LaMotta, who also pitched 5.1 innings of work. The loss dropped the Lumberjacks' record to 2-2 on the season and moved Baylor to 1-0 after their season opener.
After being forced to play a three-game series in two days because of rain for the second straight weekend, the Lumberjacks will face the Bears in a twin bill on Sunday beginning at noon at Baylor Ballpark.
