
Ladyjacks Thump Northwestern State

NACOGDOCHES - Senior LaToya Mills was one of five Ladyjacks to score in double figures Saturday as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team defeated Northwestern State, 85-69, in Natchitoches, La. The victory improved SFA to 14-6 (.700) on the season and 8-1 (.889) in Southland Conference action.
Northwestern State led once, 3-2, for a total of 18 seconds in the first half and that would be as close as the Lady Demons would get to victory. The Ladyjacks would go on a run to take a 10-point first half lead and never look back. Mills led SFA with a game-high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while sophomore Nikki Carr busted out of her scoring slump with 18 points on 4-of-5 (.800) shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
The Ladyjacks built there advantage to as many as 20 points, 45-25, in the first half before Northwestern State went on a 10-4 run to close the gap to 14 points heading into the intermission. The Ladyjacks were able to build their lead by dominating the glass. SFA went into halftime owning a 32-14 advantage on the glass, and finished the game out rebounding the Lady Demons, 46-39, for the game.
Northwestern State made a couple of minor runs at SFA in the second half cutting the lead to single digits, 67-58, with 9:10 to play behind reserve point guard Shonte Kennedy's 14 points. But every time the Lady Demons made a run SFA had an answer.
Senior Kirby Killingsworth recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Classmate Kendria Smith added 10, grabbed five boards and blocked five shots, while junior Charity Egenti recorded her second consecutive double-figure scoring game with 10 points.
The Ladyjacks will look to make it four straight wins Thursday when they return home to host Louisiana-Monroe. The game against ULM is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
