NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team is back tied for the top spot in the Southland Conference after knocking off previously undefeated Texas-Arlington and sweeping the season series against Lamar. The Ladyjacks (13-6/7-1 SLC) enter the week winners of two straight and eight of their last nine. The Ladyjacks will travel to Northwestern State Saturday for its lone game of the week. Northwestern State enters the game losing its last two, and four of its last seven games. The game against the Lady Demons is scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m. in Prather Coliseum.
SFA vs. the Lady Demons: The Ladyjacks own a 41-16 (.719) all-time record against conference rival Northwestern State, but the Ladyjacks have struggled lately. SFA has lost four of the last six games against Northwestern State, including five consecutive setbacks in Natchitoches. The two teams split the season series last year, with each team winning on its home court. Saturday's game will be the only meeting between the two schools this season.
Attacking the Glass: Senior LaToya Mills was close to unstoppable on the glass Thursday night, against Texas-Arlington. She finished the game with a career-high 24 rebounds including 10 offensive boards. Mills' 24 rebounds mark the first time a Ladyjack has grabbed at least 20 rebounds in a game since Christie Smith recorded 20 rebounds against then Northeast Louisiana in the 1994-95 season. It is also the most rebounds by a Ladyjack since Doris Felderhoff posted 25 in the 1976-77 season.
Rewriting History: Senior LaToya Mills recorded a career-high 24 rebounds in the Ladyjacks four-point victory over Texas-Arlington Thursday, and in the process placed her name in yet another school top-10 list. The 24 rebounds place Mills tied for fourth on the school's all-time single-game records list. Mills also placed her name at the top of the NCAA charts with her 24 rebounds. The 24 boards are the most by a player at the NCAA Division I level this season.
Double-Double: Despite having only two points and eight rebounds at intermission, senior LaToya Mills stepped up her game in the second half against Texas-Arlington. Mills finished with 14 points and a career-high 24 rebounds. It marks the fifth time this season and the 25 time in her career that she has recorded double-figure points and rebounds in a game.
Speed Limit 80: The Ladyjacks scored 86 points against Lamar, marking the sixth time in the last nine games that SFA has scored at least 80 points. SFA is 10-0 when scoring at least 80 points.
The Defense Doesn't Rest: The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team put forth one of its best defensive performance in school history, Thursday night against Texas-Arlington. The Ladyjacks held UTA to only 35 points on 12-of-62 (.194) shooting. It was the first time the Ladyjacks held an opponent below 40 points since the 2002-03 season when SFA surrendered only 38 points to Lamar. It is the fewest points surrendered by a Ladyjack team since SFA held Texas-San Antonio to 32 points during the 2000-01 season.
Career Highs: A couple of Ladyjacks had some career performances in the Ladyjacks 86-60 victory over Lamar Saturday. Junior Charity Egenti scored a career-high 14 points, grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and blocked a career-high five shots. Freshman Jamie Ansley scored a career-high 11 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting. Classmate Anitria Mosley tied a career with nine points. She also grabbed a career-high six boards and dished out a career-high seven assists.
Up Next ... SFA will be back in action Thursday Feb. 9, when it hosts Louisiana-Monroe. The game against ULM will start at 7 p.m., in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks will be back in action less than 48 hours later when they travel to Thibodaux, La. to face Nicholls State (2 p.m.).
