The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team enters the final week of the regular season looking to wrap up at least a share of the Southland Conference title. SFA enters the week with an 18-7 (.720) overall record and is currently tied for the top spot in the SLC with a 12-2 (.857) mark. The Ladyjacks will be in Monroe, La., Wednesday to face the Lady Indians. The game against ULM (17-9/9-6 SLC) is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Ladyjacks will return home to close out the 2005-06 regular season Friday against Sam Houston State. The game against the Bearkats (9-16/4-10 SLC) is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Friday's game will be Ladyjack senior night. Four Ladyjack seniors will be playing the final regular-season home game of their careers.
SFA vs. the Lady Indians: The Ladyjacks are 39-14 (.736) all-time against Louisiana-Monroe. Although the Ladyjacks have dominated the all-time series against ULM, the Lady Indians have had some success lately. Louisiana-Monroe has won three of the last five meetings between the two teams, including a sweep of the season series last year. The Ladyjacks have dropped the last two meetings in Monroe, but recorded a 61-53 victory over the Lady Indians earlier this season.
Magic Number: The 2005-06 season is winding down and the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team controls its own destiny for the Southland Conference regular-season title. The Ladyjacks have already locked up the league's No. 2 seed, and can win at least a share of the conference title if they win their final two games against Louisiana-Monroe and Sam Houston State. The Ladyjacks still need some help to earn the league's No. 1 seed. SFA will need two win out and have the Lady Mavs to lose one of its final two games to earn the No.1 seed.
20 Something: The benchmark for a successful season in college basketball, in terms of wins, is 20. The Ladyjacks are closing in on that mark this season. The Ladyjacks need to win their final two regular-season games to accomplish the feat this season. If the Ladyjacks can win 20 games this season, it would mark the first time SFA has won 20 games since the 2001-02 campaign. It would also be the Ladyjacks' 25th 20-win season since the school started tracking results during the 1972-73 season.
Crashing the Boards: The Ladyjacks really attacked the glass in their victory against Texas State. SFA out rebounded the Bobcats, 54-43. It marks the first time this season that the Ladyjacks have recorded at least 50 rebounds in a game. It is the most by a Ladyjack team since SFA pulled down 59 against Northwestern State (Jan. 6th) last season.
Long-Range Bombers: The Ladyjacks continue to knock down three-pointers at a sweltering pace. SFA was 5-of-10 (.500) from beyond the arc against Texas-San Antonio, marking the third time this season that SFA has hit at least 50 percent from beyond the arc. The Ladyjacks lead the Southland Conference with a .376 three-point field-goal percentage and are second in the league averaging 6.24 three-pointers per game.
Shattering Records: The Ladyjacks have set a new school record with their 156 three-pointers this season. The new mark shatters the previous mark of 142 set during the 2001-02 season
Chasing Another Record: Senior LaToya Mills pulled down 16 rebounds over the weekend which places her among the school's all-time top 10 in that category. Mills is currently ninth all-time at SFA with 812 career boards.
Up Next ... If the Ladyjacks win their final two games, they will be at least the No. 2 seed and host the first and second round of the 2006 O'Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Tournament. The games will be Monday, March 6 (7 p.m.) and Wednesday, March 8 (7 p.m.), with the championship game scheduled to be played Saturday, March 11 at 3 p.m. on FSN-Southwest.
