EDINBURG, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team led No. 17 (Baseball America Top 25 poll) Arkansas after two innings Saturday but the Razorbacks proved to be too strong for SFA recording a 15-7 victory. The loss drops SFA to 2-7 (.222) on the season.
After Arkansas jumped out to a three-run lead in top of the first, SFA answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the first when freshman Hunter Bell singled in sophomore Buck Britton from third. The Razorbacks answered with another run in their half of the second before the `Jacks rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the second.
With the bases loaded Britton drilled a shot to center field that was misplayed by Arkansas' Stephen Robison, which allowed brother Clay Britton to score. The `Jacks tied the game when Kyle Freeman and Steven Hill drew back-to-back walks. The fourth and final run of the inning was scored when a failed pick off attempt allowed Buck Britton to come home.
Arkansas rallied in its half of the third scoring four runs. The Razorbacks added three in the fourth and fifth and one in the sixth to take a 15-5 lead over SFA.
SFA mounted one final rally in the bottom of the eighth. With two on and two out, Freeman reached on a throwing error by Arkansas first baseman Danny Hamblin, which allowed Buck Britton and Eric Tasler to score.
Buck Britton finished the game 1-for-5 from the plate with one RBI and three runs scored. Zach Gardner was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Kyle Watson got the start but was only able to go two innings, surrendering eight runs and seven hits. Watson did strikeout three batters.
The `Jacks close out the AL Ogletree Classic Sunday afternoon against TCU. The game against the Horned Frogs is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from Edinburg Field.
