EDINBURG, Texas - Texas-Pan American scored four runs in the bottom half of the first inning and that would be all the offense it would need to get by the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team, 10-3, Friday night at Edinburg Field. The `Jacks are now 2-6 (.250) on the season.
Junior Jake Leonhardt settled down after the first and pitched the next four innings surrendering only one run and striking out a season-high four batters. The Lumberjacks provided Leonhardt with some offense in the top half of the third. SFA loaded bases with no outs and junior Steven Hill drove in a run on a fielder's choice. The `Jacks pushed across their second run of the inning on a throwing error by UTPA shortstop Chris Lozano.
The `Jacks didn't hold the momentum as UTPA answered with runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings to take 10-2 lead heading into the ninth inning. SFA scored one more run in the top half of the ninth to close out the scoring.
Six different `Jacks recorded a hit Friday night. Pinch hitter Chase Cundiff came on in the ninth and got a hit to drive in the final run of the game. Sophomore Buck Britton went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while freshman Hunter Bell went 1-for-2.
The `Jacks return to action Saturday to face No. 17 (Baseball America Top 25 poll) Arkansas. The game against the Razorbacks is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from Edinburg Field.
