HOUSTON, Texas - The Houston Cougars recorded three first-inning runs and that was more than enough offensive support as UH defeated Stephen F. Austin, 8-1, Tuesday night at Cougar Field. The `Jacks are now 2-5 (.286) on the season.
The Cougars built a three-run lead in the home half of the first inning and added another run in the third before SFA cracked the scoreboard in its half of the fourth inning. The Lumberjacks got on the scoreboard when junior Steven Hill led off the inning with a home run to left field. It was Hill's second homer of the season.
It would be as close as the `Jacks would get as Houston answered with one-run innings in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Freshman Russ Fornea went three innings for SFA and took the loss. He finished the game with one strike out. Hill finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with the home run. Classmate Clay Britton recorded two hits in four plate appearances.
The `Jacks return to action Friday when they take on Texas-Pan America in the Al Ogletree Classic. The game is slated to begin at 5 p.m. from Edinburg Stadium in Edinburg, Texas.
