This week we had the opportunity to clinch the Southland Conference title not once, but twice. We traveled to Arlington to play UTA on Wednesday. A win there would guarantee us at least a share of the title, and UTA was not going to hand it to us. The Mavericks needed a win against us to have any real hope of being champions themselves.
Their fans were insane! They went so far as to look up our biographies on the Internet and knew everything from our majors to our parents' names, siblings, and hobbies. They were however quite creative and skilled linguistically, telling us that not only did we "suck", but that several individuals were "lame-o." Personally I feel that when an O is added to the end of an insult its effect increases exponentially.
Even with all of the support from their fans and the ridiculous noise level of the gym, we were able to win convincingly in three. That win secured a third SLC championship and some new jewelry. It is tradition that the senior class, along with Coach, get to pick out the championship rings, and being a senior, the win was just a little more exciting.
We loaded back onto the bus and headed back to Nac. We arrived home around 1:30 a.m. (just in time to get some beauty rest before my economics exam the next morning). We spent Thursday at home and then left early Friday for San Marcos so that we would be able to practice in their gym.
Saturday morning we shopped. It would be unlawful for our team to pass through San Marcos without stopping at the fabulous outlet mall. This year we only had two hours, so the night before, several members of the team, including my roommate for the trip, Lauren Michael, mapped out the best route to maximize their shopping experience.
After a hearty meal at Luby's (where Laura Cramer managed to eat the largest chicken fried steak and half of another one) we headed to the gym. The game was intense. They too had some serious fans who not only mocked our team, but the officials as well. The Bobcats forced us into a fourth game, but we ended it there. The win versus Texas State in their coliseum on their senior night assured that our conference title was solely ours.
As we relished our new championship, the team came together, and Coach decided to spice up the traditional post-game cheer. So, as we stood center court at Texas State, we chanted "Ah SFASU - 3-PEAT!" It was a satisfying cheer to cap an even more satisfying week.
Next week we will travel to Natchitoches, La. and Conway, Ark. for our last matches before the conference tournament. *Shout out to E-MAN, and every member of the Stevens family.
