NACOGDOCHES - Senior Jennifer Simpson and sophomore Jessica Gaines came off the bench to score 11 points, each, to lead the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team to an 85-48 victory over Centenary Saturday night. The victory bumps SFA 4-3 (.571) on the season.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to an early double-digit lead by playing strong defense, and holding onto the basketball in the first half. The Ladyjacks were 17-of-43 (.395) from the floor in the first half, and forced the Ladies into 15 first-half turnovers. Centenary shot 40 percent from the floor during the first 20 minutes, but the Ladies were unable to gain any momentum, because SFA went into the intermission having not committed a turnover in the opening half.
Despite the fact that SFA only shot 33 percent from the floor in the second half, the Ladyjacks were able to extend their lead to as many as 39 points in the second half by holding the Ladies to 21 percent from the floor and outrebounding Centenary, 37-26. SFA also forced Centenary into 28 turnovers, which it converted into 28 points.
The real story of the game was the strength of the Ladyjack bench. The SFA bench outscored the whole Centenary team by two, 50-48. Simpson and Gaines led the way with 11 each, while senior Natalie Kizzee added nine points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jamie Ansley scored five points and pulled down eight rebounds, while freshman Angelina Dennison scored a career-high eight points and pulled down three rebounds.
Centenary cut the Ladyjack lead to four points, 19-15, with 10:27 remaining in the first half, but the Ladies never really threatened SFA after that. Centenary was led by Hollie Wilkins, who scored 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Senior Charity Egenti scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds, while classmate Evelyn Edwards added six points and six rebounds. Junior Nikki Carr only played four minutes in the game but finished with six points on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday to host Tulsa. The game against the Golden Hurricane is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
