LAKE CHARLES, La. - Shahin Pabani's goal in overtime helped the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team put a halt to its two-game slide with a critical 2-1 win against McNeese State Friday. The win moved the Ladyjacks to within a game of getting back to .500 for the season with a 6-7-0 overall record and, more importantly, put SFA back in the Southland Conference race with a 2-2-0 league mark.
Pabani, a senior forward scored the game-winner three minutes into the extra period. Redshirt freshman Jennar Turner assisted on the play. The goal is Pabani's sixth of the season, moving her back into a tie with sophomore Amanda Alders for the team lead. Turner's assist was her second of the season.
SFA got on the board in the 29th minute when sophomore transfer Rachel Schwind scored on a corner kick. The goal was the first in a Ladyjack uniform for the talented midfielder who transferred to SFA from Texas Tech.
The Ladyjacks held the lead through the half, limiting McNeese (5-4-0, 1-2-0) to just one shot on goal. The Cowgirls dialed up some offense in the second half, though. McNeese found more opportunities in SFA territory, earning three corner kick chances in the second half. The increased pressure paid off with a Cynthia Torres goal that tied the score in the 82nd minute.
The goal was the only one allowed by sophomore 'keeper Francesca Tierno, who collected her fourth victory of the season, evening her record at 4-4-0. Tierno posted four saves in the contest to give her 26 on the year.
The road victory was just SFA's second on the season. The Ladyjacks are now 2-5-0 away from home. SFA's other road win came in the SLC opener at Sam Houston State. If the Ladyjacks hope to continue their current momentum, they'll have to get it done on the road. SFA is set to play at Northwestern State Sunday. The game in Natchitoches is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
