This weekend we were able to wrap up both of our matches very quickly. In our first match on Friday we were able to take care of Nicholls State, who did not appear to have brought its "A" game. We were able to take care of our side of the court and go on several long service runs, including one in the third game by sophomore Lauren Railey (or Riley depending on what announcer you are listening to--just kidding Greg!). The match ended in three games. Nicholls State was never able to break the 20-point mark against us.
The next day after Coach Humphreys had finished her pre-game speech freshman Briana Taylor noticed her new shoes and decided to compliment them by saying that they looked "witty." Upon hearing this comment, junior JJ Jones, who has really enhanced her comedic skills this year, sarcastically noted that they were also well informed. After the laughter died down, we called it up and headed down the tunnel to begin warm-up.
Saturday's game was a little more challenging than Friday's. Southeastern Louisiana had some strong hitters that challenged us pretty well. In true competitor's fashion, we kept our focus on the task at hand and won in three games and it only took a little over an hour. The highlight of the match was Ashley Edwards, who shattered her old record of blocks in a game with a match-high of seven.
The low stress level of the matches allowed the freshmen to get in some valuable playing time and gain real game experience, including Kelsie Heppler working on her skills in her new position as an outside hitter.
Next weekend we venture out of Nacogdoches to continue conference play. We are playing McNeese State and Lamar who are the in first and second place in the East Division.
